During my student teaching, I introduced my students to the Villanelle, a French style of poetry. The Villanelle is a highly structured poem written in five triplets followed by a quatrain for a total of nineteen lines. The rhyme scheme is precise, aba for the triplets and abaa for the quatrain. The final requirement is that the first and third lines of the first stanza be repeated in a specific order throughout the poem. Perhaps one of the most famous examples of the Villanelle is Dylan Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night". Click on the link below to see some of my students original Villanelles.
